How can you get rid of petrol pong from Leathers

#1 Post by fatboy » Mon Feb 27, 2012 7:56 pm

Hi all, a mate of a mate went to fuel up his bike at a Tesco garage.By the time he had put a couple of quids worth in he was covered in petrol. He went to the paystation, they told him the pump hose was damaged in an attempted theft in the night, 3 other hoses were als damaged (but they failed to check the other pumps ).They told him they would happilly pay any dry claening bills but were unsure what to do about Leathers.
Will petrol affect the stitching in any way?
Sounds like they were a bit negligent ect ?

New leathers

He should insist on it IMHO

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

seconded you have to ask yourself would you buy leathers soaked in petrol and trust them to protect you ? If the answer is no the question is answered.
For the avoidance of doubt and for the benefit of my wife, not everything I may say here will be absolutely true I may on ocassion embellish a little for effect.

Have to concur with the previous replies. Sue for new.
I'm right 98% of the time so why worry about the other 3%?

Agreed.

I got covered in diesel at work and my overalls last about 2 months after that just destroyed the fabric.

Would be worth getting in touch with one of those professional leathers cleaners (http://www.hideout-leather.co.uk/alterations), see what they say about petrol on leather - it may be fine, but I would have thought it would remove the natural oils and leave the leather brittle - likely a replacement needed as stated by others.

..... by adding an even stronger, more offensive pong - you'll never notice the petrol.

The petrol station seem to have acted with reckless irresponsibility. As a minimum they should have properly checked all the pumps and closed any with damage.
I guess they must have had more important things to do - like unnecessarily demanding that bikers remove the hats that the law requires us to wear.

Never mind removing the pong - I'd be more worried about the effect on the stitching which is bound to be the weakest part.

Write to the manufacturers of your leathers and ask them, they're bound to say the leathers are no longer fit for purpose and should be replaced, you can then use that letter to claim the cost of replacing them from the petrol station.
