THIS IS PROB ANOTHER STOOPID QUESTION

Sorry if I am missing something obvious but what are the benefits of fitting a 2 into 1 on a V twin ? Wouldnt that be more restrictive ?

I've done it because I prefer the look of it, it gives a wider choice of end can as everyone makes them for the Mille, changing cans is cheaper, you only need one of them. It saves a bit of weight - compensating marginally for against the excess of the rider ....

I guess Aprilia didn't think it a bad idea as that's what they fitted to the Mille which, after all, was their flag-ship model.

It's not a mod you have to do - just one for those of us that prefer it.

And to present the balanced (did you notice what I did there?) viewpoint, the benefits of two cans are greater exhaust volume (better for silencing and for power), no need to change oil tank/cooler to get the Mille headers to fit and a balanced aesthetic (i.e. one can each side).

The choice of cans is virtually as wide as that for the Mille. Certain years of the RSV Mille also sported twin cans, it should be noted. Besides, do you want to look like the ubiquitous Jap Inline 4 from the back with their single can? Weight saving with a single can is 1-2kg when comparing aftermarket options, negligible really.

But the overriding thing is whether you like the look of two cans or a single can. Whichever you prefer, you will find reasons to support your choice... :smt003

Unnily enough a friend of mine has a mille and would like to have 2 cans as he prefers the balanced look

From the detached viewpoint of a Futura - I prefer the aesthetics of the symmetry of a twin system.

Of course, neither look as good as an under-seat exhaust :smt019

As a point of interest, has anyone fitted an under-seat exhaust to a Falco? It's been done to a few RSVs

I think the closest people have got has been the high level Renegades and the like. Doesn't having an underseat exhaust mean the pillion has built-in central heating - whether they want it or not?

Never owned a bike with under-seat exhausts so I'm just curious.

Not necessarily so .... I now have a 2:1 system but with Falco oil tank & cooler.

Hmmm ... not entirely convinced of this argument

There have been plenty of I4s with 2 or 4 cans .... and V twins with 2:1 (eg Vincent, Mille, SV650, KTM RC8). The Britten V twin even sported a 4:1

Agreed most definitely :smt023

Haha... I knew as I was writing my comments that you'd riposte with your latest setup, Andy. But you would have to admit that this is a comparatively recent development, and that the majority of Falconistas who want the single can setup have had to change the oil tank as well...

But as we've agreed - it's all about which 'look' you prefer. If you like it - go for it!

and for the record....

when aprilia were racing the milles they used both single and dual cans - depending on the track i think

The rider gets toasted nuts as well - but only if you're stationary for too long, especially in hot weather. On a cold day, it's quite comforting.

Guess its a marmite thing then, did wonder if there was any performance beefit as exhaust tuning is a dark art. Think I like the symetry thing Ive got carbon cans on mine and love the look of those v v shiney exits against the carbon bodies. Kin good job we all have our own tastes !

Most people know I am a twin pipe fan, but here are some simple facts. (Why make it look like a IL4?, but Andy is right it does save on the cost of cans and is slightly lighter.)
The twin pipes on the Falco, (plus other changes actually did give it a slightly better low to mid range than the Mille for a slight loss at the top end and this was done to change the character slightly, and, as V Twins are all about mid range thump, I reckon this is more use on the road than a very slight increase in outright power.
If you want a screaming top end get an IL4, they are great at it!

(Aprilia Fact).
The most expensive and highest performance version of the original Mille variations was the "Edwards" and one of the things they did to it to give it a bit of a performance boost to help justify all the extra cost, was to fit twin pipes!

Howard ..... you seem to be mixing your argument here.

Firstly you say the Falco twin pipes give a better low-down to mid-range characteristic and then you say the twin akras help the Edwards rep to achieve an ultimately higher overall power (ie top-end)
:smt017

Also ... as a point to be aware of, the Edwards rep was not built with performance goodies - it was essentially a standard Mille with some paint. However, it was delivered with a race kit for owners to fit or leave in the box (57mm TBs and twin Akras) ... twin cans supplied for racing - not for better road manners.
(That said, I don't think we can compare a set of akras with a standard aprilia can)

A number of us with the Mille system have the link pipe mods that improve bottom end and mid range - from power curves I've seen to probably better levels than the Falco 2-into-1-into-2.

Whatever, I've not done it for performance but because it looks better - showing off the lovelly mille swingarm and either Gold OZs or Carbon BST wheels - depending on which I have on there at the time.

Did renegade ever make a single can system for the Mille?

I rest my case
