If you belive the press, tt will not be compulsory, but it is being seen as an effort to reduce the apppaling standard of Motorway driving.

I assume if it is going to be available for cars, then motorcyclists should be allowed on as well.

Not much different to the 70mph dual carriageways they can already drive on. We've even got one with 3 lanes and the usual slip roads that motorways have - the only thing missing is a hard shoulder.
My guess is that most parts of the country that have motorways also have similar dual carriageways ..... so I can't really see that this will make any real difference.
I guess it's another political move to make it look as though they are doing something.

Just like to point out that Norfolk, broadly speaking has no motorway

I think its a great idea, also aswell they could maybe teach those that hug the middle lane and slow up traffic to move over and allow traffic to flow better

I also think there should be a theory re-test every 3-5 years as some people I know have little to no knowledge of the highway code.

This could be seen as an attempt to make the car test more relevant to real life. If so, how come the 3 point turn is now just a reversing manouvre (any number of turns ok) The reversing space for HGV test is to be almost halved meaning more failures/ retests. This test has 18% first time pass rate as is,nice earner? Finland requires you to drive for 12 months before you can sit your test. Make everyone drive a moped thru winter then drive a HGV thru an obstacle course off road, bring back public floggings,compulsary cold showers,rugby on tarmac,wasnt like that in my day y,know. Blah blah blah

This really needs to be bought in ASAP, the standard of driving in this country has really gone to shit.

.... they probably will be - as soon as they recognise it as being another revenue generating scheme - accompanied by another hike in test fees ....

They'll probably sneak in some nonsense that to retake the test you have to change to one of those driving licenses with your picture on it - effectively squeezing in ID cards by the back door too .....

That'll be the down side of it. But if the tests mean fewer accidents then that should bring the cost of insurance down. And again, a 3 strikes and you're out system.

Martdude, thats brilliant but if only ! WTF is going on with these richard skulls in Driving Standards Agy ? Swerve bit in bike test,relaxing car test, making new HGV drivers take a CPC (certificate of proff competance). 5 modules of crap you had to know in order to pass the test (apart from the one on healthy eating. The best bit is its NOT modular so you dont have to do unit 1 to 5,you can do anything you like as long as it adds up to 5, oh and costs about a grand!
