Yes I had a bit of a butter fingers moment tonight.

Had to replace a light bulb in my son's room. I keep the spare bulbs in the downstairs loo - I also keep a load of other stuff on shelves in there - like an old jar in which I wash my paintbrushes.
Putting the remaining bulbs back I knocked the jar and somehow failed to catch it. It was just a case of waiting to see whether the glass jar would smash at the end of its fall - leaving a sizeable clean-up operation.

The good news is it didn't smash.

The bad news is that it didn't smash as it fell on the rim of the loo ..... and smashed the loo.
Great .... another job on my list of things to sort out ASAP.

At least it's not the only loo in the house.

I wonder whether I'll get that sorted before my boiler is fixed which has been a bit of a saga (not the over50s organisation) ... it's not been working for some months and it's a bit chilly at the moment ....

Bloody hell you're just not having the luck lately. Dont come near me, you'll be a bloody bullet magnet. but seriously, hope your luck changes very soon.

Dude id you po55 of some watchful fairy godmother still on the bright sideit could have been worse you could for example have been reaching across for some new bog paper and fallen off taking the seat with you and loosening the bolts so that the whole thing started leaking before it was flushed Yes that was me

You could also have been on the biggest community day out in the town social life and slipped mid operation dislocating your artificial hip for the third time and being of some weight and in agony and having your hip out had to lie there in full view until the ambulance came ( father in law)

Or you could have had your false teeth out your baggy bottoms round your ankles strained too hard causing a heart attack so sliding off the seat and getting stuck between the bath and can with only your kermis the frog slippers showing until the neighbour (me) has to come and help retrieve your now rapidly cooling body whilst he thinks I didn't know you had such an attractive daughter and there is no way I am giving your toothless dead face the kiss of life just to impress her before being carried downstairs by the three stooges banging your head on the rails

Tell you what I never wear novelty slippers there is mo digmity in being found in those things

Get the boiler fixed feller it's getting cold and plumbers prices only go up

I've kept it going myself for some years but with the latest problems I did call in a plumber a couple of months back. He's had no end of problems in getting parts - he orders one thing, they send another, he tries to send it back, the supplier has disappeared ... a week later they turn up again.

He's a good chap and doing his best for us ... this one's just turned out to be a bit of a PITA .... but it is getting rather cold ...

Really sorry to hear about your latest misfortune. Just a thought - how old is your boiler and what type is it? If it's anything other than a condensing boiler it might be worth it to cut your losses and get a new condensing boiler installed. They are so much more efficient than the old types it really isn't funny.

Condensing boilers are typically about 97% efficient when in condensing mode compared to 75-80% efficient (or even less) for older boilers. Over a few years they will pay for themselves and if your boiler is getting problematic, it could be trying to tell you something...

not sure that there is that much difference between the two but they are pretty much the only option in the newer ones but otherwise I agree

The heat exchanger is beginning to leak a bit but it's other stuff that's stopping it working.
I'm fairly easy as to whether I replace now or repair - whichever is quickest.
My plumber does reckon I'll get another 3 or 4 yrs out of it if we fix it.

As for the loo, bought another today and after a bit of a fight with it, it's now installed. Took bloomin ages compared with what I expected.

In that case, I'll bet my pension that it doesn't have a stainless steel heat exchanger. I did some research before buying my condensing boiler and found out that a lot of manufacturers essentially carried on with the same heat exchanger technology they were using with non-condensing boilers when they moved to condensing boilers.

Big mistake. The condensate is mildly acidic and will eat through aluminium or cast iron heat exchangers in fairly short order. Once that happens the boiler is uneconomic to repair and you need a new one.

Moral of the story: insist on a condensing boiler with a stainless steel heat exchanger.
