Spelling and the modern youth

Just been over on one of the Army websites I frequent, Ive noticed that more and more of the new members there are teenagers.
This in itself isnt a problem. Everyone has to start somewhere in life in the Army, we've all done training, etc.
What amazes me is the fact that the older members are constantly picking up the youngsters for text-like spelling. These kids however are just doing 'what they do' however. they see no wrong in it. I dont own up to being the best speller on the block, but I do attempt to write legibly.
Is this commonplace in civvi street, in the workplace, etc, or are we just being sent the more..... chavlike.. members of the community?
I'll give you an example:
i went to ATR winchester and i frt it was a reali good camp the facilities are great oki no women recruits but its not just this ATR dat dnt allow women
part of life u gtta live wit it afta ur trainin u soon be mixing wit females
This from someone who intends to be an RMP!! I find it scary that this ...chav... could very soon end up a JNCO in the Military Police!! I'd hate to see the reports they file!
Ah well. It could be worse, we could all be speaking German.

Its very similar on civvy street I think.
But whats even more frightening is the fact they can't add or subtract either

It's a recurring discussion in our office where we input stuff dictated by police officers, we just can't believe the general standard of education - they can't read, they can't think, they have no common sense, it's frightening to think these are the people who are supposed to be 'Making Dorset Safer'
Typical example - dictating a name they'll spell S-M-I-T-H but not say whether it's Stewart or Stuart.
They will spell out a placename like Cirencester because they can't pronounce it. They use all kinds of words completely out of context just because they sound similar to the word they should be using.
They don't understand why we need a date of birth to distinguish between one John Smith and another.
They can't even speak clearly!
It's making our job much harder as every dictation takes longer to sort out. And heaven help us when these are the ones who are training the next generation!

A common pronounciation up our way is "definately" with an emphasis on the 'a' so they say "definaytley"

Don't get me started.......
Too late..... It's bad enough that many people can't spell, punctuate or even form an intelligable sentence but my pet hate is mispronunciation.
Examples - Expresso, Ecetera and Bush's fave - Nucular
A great read for punctuation pedants out there is "Eats Shoots And Leaves". ...V. funny.
