camping advice - part 2

#1 Post by Aladinsaneuk » Fri Mar 16, 2007 10:07 pm

now doing the final bits of shopping for my solo camping jaunts, and have the next question...

any thoughts on a suitable camping stove to take on the bike?

any thoughts re spirit/meths burners?

or is gas safer??

I personally go with gas. Meths is a messy business.

Those tablets generally cook for about 8 to 10 minutes. In that time they can boil water whilst there's a boil in the bag meal in it heating up. (a mess tin-ful of water)

Depends what you're after, but with a bit of practise the hexi stove can be used really effectively. I still prefer these in my job over a gas stove as they pack smaller... which would be the same requirement for on a bike.

Unlike most will say, you can cook without lots of black soot on your cooking pot! Sprogs at work tend to end up with blackened mess tins, whereas the older guys tend to have learnt the knack and dont!

Hexi's are the best :smt001 - but if you haven't a mate in the trade :smt010

Milletts do a tiny cookset that has pans and a fold up cooker, comes in a little bag to keep it all neat :smt069

Missed part 1 ..............if you are contemplating using hexie then i take it you are trying to travel light and cheap ?

You can also buy re usable alcohol jelly stoves, looks like a tinned sponge pudding, take off the lid and its full of alcohol jelly ,just light it ,put on the pan support and your away......these have the advantage of being able to put them out when YOU want ....unlike hexie.

Did you discount cheap gas cookers, nowadays you can get mixed gas for cold weather.

Personally i use a coleman multi fuel, but they arent cheap, however you can run them on some unleaded fuel from the bike.

The part one was from the old forums and was to do with tents....

and yes, light and cheap - just something to throw a tin of something into a dixie and warm through.. I would use a pub but they do not appear to want to be open at 0700 when I want a coffee.....
