Apparently som e councils are thinking about having flashing amber lights at quiter times of day.
My view of this is that it would be dangerous - if they are going to have all the lights flashing the same colour at the same time, why not just turn them off? surely that would save more electricity and avoid the confusion?

I agree with your view.

Indeed we don't need traffic lights in many situations at all times of day. I agree that it would be far better to turn them off completely when not in use.
I think it may be that quite a few roads will need to be re-marked as they have been laid out assuming traffic lights - i.e. stop and give way lines will need to be moved closer to the junction so that you can see what's coming - many traffic lights have their road markings set too far back.
That said, I think it would be worth the effort of doing that - it would pay back in improved traffic flow, reduced running costs of the lights themselves and a good saving in fuel burned waiting for the lights to change while nothing is coming.
.... then we can move on to turning off streetlights at midnight (or some other agreed time) ....

Works in Europe, so why not over here? Are our drivers any more stupid and easily confused than mainland European drivers? Actually, don't answer that
It would be great at the bottom of our road, they've changed the signal times, so you can be sat on a deserted road for minutes at a time waiting for the lights to change.

Where i work, the lights dont detect bikes, so i am forced to run them if im closing down. otherwise i would be stuck there all night.
no lights would definately be a bonus after 7pm!
