It.. the one I have here, has what looks like a screwdriver flatpoint end and then coming back along the 'blade' are cuts in either side as in the picture.
Ive had a good dig on google and havent come up with a name yet for it.
No maker's name on the blade or handle, all I know is it is a woodworking tool!
Hmm I shall have a search along the lines of chiselling tools.. Cheers pat :)

Most are probably turning or carving tools; the one on extreme right, I'd say, is for working inside a hollow form. But the handles don't look big enough for turning tools, other than for small scale work. They mostly have a home-made/adapted look.
The one you're asking about - it has a home-made look to it. The 'blade' doesn't look thick enough for anything heavy duty. The notches appear to be regularly spaced, but vary slightly in depth. I'd suggest : depth gauge; tool for lightly scoring /marking a workpiece (e.g. candlestick) on a lathe, prior to further & deeper profiling.
Is there any indication of sharpening/bevelling along the side of the 'blade'?

Mart, The slits arent equally spaced, but increase slowly from tip to handle, it has a fairlysquare edge but i wouldnt say it's held a sharp edge on it. I keep thinking some sort of weird wiring tool, although it was from a box of woodworking stuff..
I reckon it could be some sort of depth gauge, i shall peruse t'web and see what it comes up with!

LOL! Naah I needed to know so it can go with a set of other tools, but as I didnt know what it was, needed to research it first! Now i know i can shove it with the saws rather than the chisels!
Plus the one ive got here is in better nick than that S&J one..
Bidding would start at £1.20 ..

That was an interesting demonstration of prejudice at work - my interpretation was influenced/prejudiced by the gauge's appearance as part of an assemblage of turning/carving tools.

Yeah, I was twisted the wrong way by that photo showing it with chisels and the like, also when it came out of the workshop it had been in with a selection of tools such as chisels and gouges.
Annoying thing was i've seen one similar before and couldnt place it. Now knowing what it is, I can place it exactly, Mate's Dad's shed when I was at school, remember him having one on a shadowboard right next to a couple of hand saws..
