Good start to the new year

Rear tyres on my wifes car are about 4 weeks old.
I was sat doing my daily constitution this morning when the wife calls up the stairs to tell me that her car has a flat rear tyre, and she is not insured to drive mine.
So, I cut my constitution short
waddle downstairs in my dressing gown, go outside (in the freezing cold 
) and blow it up using the mobile compressor.
Anyway, she takes daughter to college, I have my shower and get dressed and take the car around to a local tyre shop who does internal repairs.
Whips off the offending wheel and immidiately the cause become apparent, a dirty bloody great nail gone through the inside of the tread and out through the sidewall which means it can't be repaired
So, £62 and 1 tyre later, she is back on the road. Could have done without that first day back to work and all that, or more to the point, why could it not haved been one of the fronts which are older?
