iv put the bike of the road and putting the car on the road , iv never bean in this situation before , credit crunch and all that , but whats the rules when i need an mot for the car ,can it be a preferd garage as theres alot of roagers out there , say within 20 miles , how do i get it to the garage , it will be insured , but no rad tax , bike will be the same when bikes ready too, , but i can put that in a van , and cn i drive the car back home from mot till i get road tax ? i have asked the q on another forum just want to check , cheers

You are legally allowed to drive (or ride) a vehicle to a pre arranged MOT without a current certificate and without a tax disc, and then drive it home afterwards regardless of whether it passes or fails, although in the case of a failure, you are allowed to ride it to a place of repair.

The only condition is that it must be insured, you must go by the most direct route and the MOT station must be within a reasonable distance, although no one has ever defined what a reasonable distance is.

If the tax on your bike is likely to expire during its time of the road, you will need to complete a Statutory Off Road Notice (SORN) which will be valid until you then tax it next time, but you will still be allowed to ride it to your MOT test centre providing it is insured.

thanks tc , just on the off chance what happens if one of those mobile road tax cams take a pic of you ? iv saw them on the m8 up here , or thats what iv been told they were

Don't worry about it. If you are on your way to a pre-arranged MOT, then the garage will have a record and that is your statutory defence.

Beasr in mind that it is not the Police who prosecute, but the DVLA at Swansea.

Just to add - when you book your MOT make sure that the MOT station notes the reg no of the car or bike.
