Has anyone done this? Any books that are particularly helpful?

I've heard that ancestry.co.uk is a decent site, but are there any free ones that give similar information?

I've got a decent start, a distant relative did a tree going back to 1750 (vicar of Mousehole in Cornwall) on my maternal grandmother's side, but I'd like to pick up on other strands of mine and my wife's families.

try www.genesreunited.com I dont think it is free - have not done it myself but apparently it works very well.

1750 wouldn't be a bad result, never mind about a start.
Beyond that you are probably gonna be trolling thro things like probate papers, newspaper reports, shipping details, court reports, churchyard plans and goodness knows what else. The normal avenues, such as registry records will have dried up.
All sorts of records are out there on the web, and often linked to from geneology sites.
Be aware though, that early, with literacy being as it was, names were often spelled in a variety of ways for instance.

.... and then at some stage you're probably going to have to start researching in other languages and in other countries given that we are a nation (sorry, correction before someone from Scotland, Wales or wherever points out .... several nations) made up of waves of settlers and invaders. At some point the search is bound to move beyond these shores .....

We use this one http://www.tribalpages.com/ We have made contact with loads of people on the site and keep in touch/assist as we can

the mormon church is apparently the place to go..... according to my mother who has just done a fairly comprehensive family tree for us
