Aye, the Factory was located just down the road from where I am now in Histon. I remember it closing in the early 90's. The Golliwogg followed smartly with it for obvious reasons..?

Nice to see HM TQ has fallen foul of the oh god you cant do THAT brigade.

Reminds me of the Falkland Islanders, the Forces were informed to no longer call them Bennies (after Benny from Crossroads) So they became referred to as Stills.....

Still Bennies. :smt005 :smt005

That got me into trouble when I first came to this country. That word does not mean in SA what it means here.... in SA its a character and you can call someone a GW without having to duck bullets and dodge knives afterwards :smt003 . I was taken to HR and a huge story followed.

Ho hum...

There were paper ones pushed behind the normal label on the jar, kids (like me), collected them and ultimately, when you had a certain number, you sent them off to Robertsons and they sent you a colourful metal badge that your wore on your jacket or whatever. If you ate enough jam you could collect lots of different Gollies.
Of course it was really a secret ploy carried out by the NF and others to turn all the kids of that time into racists, just hiding behind the pretence of being nice shiny badges for kids to collect.
Seem to remember lots of other similar badges were around at that time, sad I know but there were no computer games (no computers!) at that time. we also collected stamps and football cards from packets of gum.

P.S. If you carried on collecting the metal badges for 10 years or so, you would probably have enough to swap em for a knackered old BSA Bantam on your 16th birthday. :smt003

I loved my golly.... his hair fell off tho so he probably didn't look like any tennis player :smt012

reckon a lot more people would be a lot more tolerant of others if our golliwogs were still around .... :smt003

I have 2 golliwogs, I might well carry them about and when people ask what they are tell them.

Somewhere in thew loft I have a small tin full of Robinsons Gollies.

What really annoys me is the sacking of Carol Thatcher, and they still have that ignorant arsehole Ross, with the foul mouth on the BBC. If you want to sack her then he must go as well.

I personally think theyre a throwback to the old rather more white orientated days when racism was less monitored and controlled. I wouldnt say the days of slavery, but the time after.

Saying that got a glance when i told one of the Lads off in his workplace the other day...

'And turn that fucking wogbox off when im talking to you.......'

But it was!!!! No racial intent, it's a bloody wogbox. Big old Sony thing.

I still call Scottish people Porridgewogs. Which is fair enough, they still call me an English Prick.

The change from Golliwog to Golli was a sign of enlightenment and respect. (a century ago)
The outlawing of Golly is pure p.c. b.s. imho.
It's not as though people are sticking pins in em. are they?

There are many other equally harmless words that can be used just as insultingly and it is that use that should be condemned, not the words.
