Is anyone prepared to defend modern popular music?
Does anyone have a good word to say about anything released in the last 12 months?
I have pretty much ignored most of it but will say that I am quite impressed by a couple of tracks on 'Only By The Night' by Kings of Leon. Still not a patch on Youth and Young Manhood though.
I feel sure that there must be loads of good stuff released from 'right out there way away from the mainstream' but it takes me ages to discover it as I don't listen to the likes of Radio 1 assuming they even play that kind of thing which I doubt. 6 music does better but I can't listen to it much.
Hallelulja anyone ?

Leona Lewis is about the only current chart topper I go out of my way to listen to. Even then it's got sod all to do with her music... (which is good)
Take this cover of Snow Patrol's Run..

Im sure she was singing about something but i cant quite remember what....
I got Leona Lewis's Spirit album for Christmas, as well as Chinese Democracy by Guns n Roses. (Which is absolutely fantastic btw)
I went on a course before I went on leave, I seem to recall all I could get on the stereo of the hire car was Radio One.. which had resorted to playing older songs!!?! Maybe even R1 have had enough of the crap thats played nowadays.
Hallelulja? Ram it. Horrid song. I'd rather listen to Pinky and Perky's hit parade

Never ride faster than your guardian angel can fly
I'm sorry but that is exactly the kind of thing I mean. It's representative of all this mainstream 'talent' show crap that passes for music these days. And the original was nothing special anyway. IMHO anywayKwackerz wrote:Leona Lewis is about the only current chart topper I go out of my way to listen to. Even then it's got sod all to do with her music... (which is good)

My daughter introduced me to Reverend and the Makers, no I'd never heard of them either. I'm not mad about their music but it's better than the more commercial stuff and the words mean something.
This was the song that inspired Lucy to let her house, buy a campervan, and take off to Europe for 8 months - then come home and work 12 hour nights for months to get enough dosh to do it all again!

Don't you mean lack of talent in shows?
I think I've listened to 1 record released this year and it was so long ago I can't remember even the groups name (it was dire anyway)
I nowadays listen to my ripped cd collection, mostly 60/70's and classical
Kill Hannah seemed fairly good.
Dunno whether I should admit it on a public forum 'cos their music is a bit rubbish .... but at the same time quite enjoyable - in the same sort of way as I enjoyed The Monkeys and Mud in previous decades - but I quite enjoy Scouting for Girls.
Anyway, back to the Hawkwind, Genesis (pre the awful Phil Colins), Zep, Sabbath, Floyd, Santana, Hendrix and all the other good stuff I've got on my phone

Ah yes the Genesis / Phil Collins conundrum.D-Rider wrote:

I have very little time for Mr Collins (good drummer though) and always say to people that Genesis were only any good before he took over on vocals............except...... Trick of the Tail is my favourite Genesis album
