Bike Racers on TV and their left feet.

I don't follow the racing but enjoy watching the odd race now and again. I have noticed in I think Moto GP or SBK that often when braking hard for certain corners many riders left feet come adrift from the footpeg.

Is this the sheer force of the braking and the effect of inertia or some deliberate 'backing it in' type move. It looks pretty untidy to me and must unsettle the rider to a degree.

Over to you then.....

Rossi started it.

It was originally referred to as his "stress indicator" as he did it when he went in "a bit hot".
Think it's a reaction to an "Oh crap I could fall off" situation that has now become a bit of a fashion - cos, let's face it, it ain't going to help if it all goes Pete Tong.
Dunno whether he got the idea from Super-moturd riders or something.

Maybe it's the bike racers' equivalent of the Tennis Players' grunt.

Heard this mentioned during the commentary of one of the GP's - apparently it's done to move weight further forward to help load the front tyre going into the corner. Don't know how true that is, but that's what I heard

Barry Sheene started it, if you look at any of his old video clips when approaching a left hand bend he always moved forward and left, I imagine as he did this it caused his foot to fall off the peg.

Also Troy Bayliss and Colin Edwards in WSB ala 2000 used to do it as well.

I did with both feet once while attempting a wheelie. Ever seen a dog trying to run with socks on its paws? Thats kinda what it must have looked like :smt003

Syltiz, you're doing it all wrong. You're trying to unload the front for a wheelie, not get more weight over it :smt003
