Speed cameras "old hat"

The government's proposal to introduce road pricing will mean you
having to purchase a tracking device for your vehicle and pay a monthly
bill to use it.

The tracking device will cost about £200 and in a recent study by the
BBC, the lowest monthly bill was £28 for a rural florist and £194 for
a delivery driver.

On top of this massive increase in tax, you will be tracked. Somebody
will know where you are at all times.
Hands up all of you that think they will abolish road tax if this gets through?
They will also know how fast you have been going, so even if you accidentally creep over a speed limit they could put an NIP with your monthly bill (no need for cameras or cops).

Im still trying to find a sensible argument FOR it.

Ah.. that's why.. THERE ISNT ONE!

It's meant to be to aid the promotion of green issues.. reducing greenhouse gasses, etc. It is, as they say, all complete bollocks. Nowt has been proven to substantiate the Governments claims. The increase in electric being used to power kettles being turned on for the cuppa you'll all need after walking / biking, the extra washing machine hours needed for the wet clothing / bigger coats baths, etc etc etc will ultimately wipe out any green savings.

It's all a scam to get money out of your pocket into TCB's Government coffers (TCB= That Cnut Blair)

hate to point this out folks

BUT

they are our servants - vote the fuckers out! - not just in general elections, but local elections - and if they are public servants, make your elected officials question them - do your research and keep your questions tight - and specify simple answers - yes or no, do not give room for woffle

and for what it is worth, I am standing for local/council elections this may - 'cos i want to make a difference and screw people guided by party doctrine

Freedom, democracy it's all a delusion, money rules

once we excepted environmental taxation we may as well walk.

We all keep being told about Greenhouse affect what about Global dimming. We reduce carbon emissions this reduces crap in the atmosphere and as a result more sunlight gets to the earth, up goes the temperature again and we are back where we started

There was a letter in MCN this week that had a fantastic way to get rid of all of this speed camera malarkey.

The writer simply suggested we should all stick to the speed limit. My first reaction was "yeah right - bloody anti-fun brigade strike again" .... but no ... that was not the point.

The theory was that if we all stuck to the speed limit then the revenue stream to the scamera partnerships would dry up. These partnerships cost serious money to run and can't last long without their income. Before long, the whole thing collapses and the partnerships are out of business.

Well, crazy as it may sound at first, it could just work - and in a fairly short space of time.

But .... it relies on virtually everyone adheering to speed limits for a period of weeks or months .... massed self-control.
That seems unlikely unless the campaign got rolling, got major TV coverage and people really believed that everyone else was going to play ball.

Can't see it happening .... but makes you think!

Out of interest how many of you guys have fallen foul of a speed camera whilst driving/riding and has anyone been caught more than once in a year?
The authorities are set to bring many national speed limits way down in rural areas many of my favorite local roads have gone from national to 40/30 mph already

They argue because of the increase in traffic together with bad driving/riding standards it is necessary to take action.

In my view better training and a return to old fashioned traffic policing would be the preferable but it's not that easy. The standard of the average motorist is pretty bad these days and that includes many police drivers I have witnessed lately. It follows cameras will be used to enforce the new speed limits or even worse as Moose has warned.

So far, no points ever in 33 yrs of riding and driving ... I put it down to a mixture of luck, observation and a preference for the type of road that doesn't carry so many cameras.
Mind you, I guess it's just a matter of time with creeping speed limits and anti-speed Nazis everywhere.

I'm certainly with you in the campaign to bring back traffic plod but while the emphasis is on speed and the economics of cameras v people favour cameras, it's doomed to failure.

Actually, I do have a solid, logical argument why faster=safer (well, at least as solid as the arguments for slower speeds) .... maybe I'll run it by you lot sometime ....
