Trees already in place when solar panels are set up don't have to be cut down, but new growth causing shading is unlawful once the panels are in place. It seems that two of Treanor and Bissett's redwoods grew in an illegal fashion and had to be chopped down.

There are so many contradictions in all efforts that are supposed to 'green' or environment-friendly.

Like the recycling wagon that collects our recycling once a fortnight - and parks in each road with the engin running while they sort the stuff from our boxes.

AND the electric cars that run on electricity that's had to be made somewhere!

It supposedly (and believably) causes more pollution to stop and start the lorries than to keep them running.

I know. That's why they should issue us with different containers for different rubbish, then they wouldn't have to hang around so long.

I know some folks wouldn't bother to sort it but IMO it would then be reasonable to say if it's not sorted they won't take it.

Back on the original post - once I would have said 'only in America' - but I'm afraid that's no longer true.

He many do you get BG, our problem is finding space for them all!
We get the normal large black wheelie.
Then there is the full size green wheelie for garden rubbish and cardboard.
Then we have a large blue box for bottles and tins, we can also use this for old clothes, but if too many can leave an extra bag.
Then we have a large blue bag with handles for paper.

Then there is the main large container, the street outside our house, which is used for everything. I live at the end of a culdesac at the bottom of a hill so all the overflowing boxes of tins or bottles and bags of paper roll or get blown down to road until they get to our drive.
On average this is around 5 to 10 cans 3 or 4 bottles (50% broken) and the usual selection of paper in my garden and outside my house.
Isn't recycling great. If I hadn't packed up smoking, I could get a £60 fine for dropping a dog end, but this lot gets left outside my house every week.

Still when Iv'e finished picking it all up, my bins and boxes get a head start on everybody else, so I can feel proud and extra GREEN.

We get a black wheelie bin for general rubbish, emptied fortnightly.

And a green box for everything else, ie tins, bottles, and newspaper - that's why they have to sort it. Also emptied fortnightly, but we can have an extra one if we ask.

They don't collect the plastic bottles at all - they used to, but they proudly announced that as part of the 'improvements' to the collection of refuse, they would no longer collect them. And what do we have most of?

We get a black wheelie bin and a green wheelie bin for recyclable which is emptied the same way as the black (on alternate weeks) and sorted back at the depot.
They take our plastic bottles (without caps) but not glass ones.

Mad, isn't it? It's different everywhere.

Taking the plastic to the dump is easy for me, it's just up the road and I can do it on the way to the shops. But my ndaughter lives about 7 miles away, and when she's passing through she tends to have a car load of children and a pushchair, so she has to make a special journey - using fuel of course.

Then there's the dump in Poole where they make you show ID to prove you live in Poole. My mate lives about 2 miles from that one, but just outside the town, so she has to travel 8 miles to our dump - also using fuel.

The whole thing is ridiculous, but of course the aim is to meet targets rather than to help the environment.

Just to confuse matters - we get a GREEN bin for our general waste, and a BROWN bin for brown cardboard, garden waste etc. We've then got two big square boxes, one for plastic bottles, the other for tins & glass - there's one truck for the brown bin, one for the plastic and one for the tins. I think they just get dropped in and taken back to the depot, probably machine sorted for the tins

The general waste is picked up on week 1, the rest on week 2, then rinse & repeat

We get a Black wheely bin for general rubbish then a green one for the recyclable stuff.. cardboard, grass cuttings, paper, etc SOMETIMES they give out green boxes that are for newspapers, glass jars, metal tins. You have to ask to get one of those though. Some of the neighbours use them, some dont, either way those green boxes are a bloody pain. Guaranteed every week there'll be rubbish scattered to the 4 corners of the estate as a result of someone putting theirs out in the wind, etc without considering weighting the rubbish down.

+1 - seems like the collectors do most of the damage our way though, if they drop anything it stays where it fell.

Forgot about paper - we get a bag to put paper in as well (like a supermarket "lifetime" bag) - at least I shred my bank statements first, otherwise they'd be all over the road

we get a black bin for general rubbish and a blue one for paper, cardboard and plastic ... like K says, you cant put the blue one out without the wind blowing it over, so I just dont bother anymore, and they only come once a month to collect it!! They've also given up on collecting bags (as in one) put by the side of the black bin... its for health and safety reasons apparently, they aren't allowed to lift them into the truck.... but they can lift them out the way to get to the wheelie bin ... no Xmas bonus for them this year!

They remind me of the bloomin' Lamps made out of scrap waterpipe and fittings they were selling down on Dartmoor at one of the Pubs.
They had a similar pricetag and were equally as crappy.

Green wheelie for general rubbish uplifted fortnightly.
Blue wheelie for paper and card uplifted once every 4 weeks
Brown wheelie for garden waste uplifted once every 4 weeks
Black box for bottles and cans lifted with blue or brown wheelie every other week.
The only thing that our local council don't appear to separate is the plastics.
