Are cheaper new road surfaces lethal?

The comments are worth a read too.

A few more speed cameras will fix this type of problem and help fill Governmet coffers. A few more dead will just help justify the cameras!

Yes, I know that sarcasm is considered the lowest form of wit......

Good article. SMA sounds nearly as bad as the Beet based shite they spread on the road in winter..

Most of the newly resurfaced roads around South Yorkshire are SMA, usually recognised by the smooth black tarmac finish, without any top dressing, and we also get the sugar beet shite on top, so they are extra special at this time of year. When I had my firat real accident in 42 years in December 2006, I locked up instantly at about 20 - 25 mph, when a car pulled out in front of me, I now know it was on an SMA surfaced road.
Glad this article has been published but it won't do any good.
I work for Rotherham MBC, they get their bsudget from the Government reduced every year and try to repair as many roads as they can with the money they have, therefore if the Government are also pushing them to use a cheaper alternative so the money goes further, they don't have much option.
Believe me, the people on the Local Councils know their roads are falling apart and they ain't happy about it.
If top surface problems are not treated really quickly, the foundations are destroyed and then it means digging down 6 or 8 feet and taking the lot out. Costs a futune and road is shut for months.
The Government make these decisions and/or force Councils to use the cheaper SMA alternatives.

You should follow some of the links out of that story. Everywhere it takes you confirms the same thing:
It's cheap, easy to lay and lethal for up to two years!

Still, I find it kind of reassuring that diesel, vans, cars, speed cameras and coppers aren't all we have to worry about.
When even the road surface is out to get you, I feel that my paranoia is now fully justified! :smt005
