There is a petition apparently to raise awareness tothe issue.
How are we supposed to win hearts and minds when the people who we employ from the locals are left to die? Ultimately the 'No' from the government is in effect donning a black hat and sentencing them to death.

Im not surprised however.

As discussed earlier, our own troops are being sold down the river, (after care issues especially, but also major issues with kit and general equipment), so what chance have our Iraqi "helpers" got.
These are just the people who we should allow in!
Same as Kwacks, I'm not surprised.

This IS a tough one.
If the government accept them on the grounds of personal safety, they are also admitting that the regime and security services that take over are not up to the job.
In an ideal world (which we don't have here) the helpers would be no more at risk than they are now and would be another small influence for good in that place.

Now I want our troops out ASAP but having gone in at the behest of the USA it is hard to balance this withdrawal with the lack of security for the general population (and these helpers in particular).

It's just one big political mess with innocents the likely victims.

When it comes down to it I guess you have to stand by those that stood by you.

Political points scoring with the lives of innocents..

I've emailed my MP about this and said how annoyed I am at GB's blatant points scoring tactics. However I doubt if he'll have the balls to say what I mean.

On that logic we need to include all the members of the Iraqi government, and their civil servants, and indeed anyone who has had contact with us.

What nonsense. We are supposed to be helping the Iraqis get to a state where they can look after themselves. What good is that if they then all run for the UK and govt handouts. They have to fend for themselves in my view.

Indeed Laz. I dont think anyone would begrudge them coming over, however there are the points of where do we stop (gurkhas?, all the families? etc, etc) and whether in fact they'd actually be safe over here anyway.

What has to be considered is who employs them.


WE employ the interpreters. We take them on the books and pay them. Iraqi Govt? Civil Servants? Nope. We dont employ them, do we! Simplarly we dont employ (as MOD/Govt) the bottle washers, cleaners, etc on the Camps. The civvi company who contract in do. (Ie: KBR, Turners, etc) so again there we dont 'owe' them anything. They are working for a civvi company.

It's not about contact, contract or anything like that. It's about the unwritten deal, we wont trash their country, we wont leave them at the hands of their aggressors.

There is a report today that says 60 have already been murdered in the past 4 years, 25in the last year.
Their fears are obviously not unwarranted.
