We have 3 cats aged 5, 3 and 12 months, all of them so far have enjoyed rude health.

About 4 weeks ago our 3 year old developed some sort of skin infection, so off down to the vet who did biopsies, gave anti biotics and an overnight stay to rehydrate him, with the instruction that we had to keep him in until the results of the biopsy were known which hopefully we will have tomorrow

Last night we noticed our youngest one squealed whenever he was touched, and he certainly was not walking very well, so this morning another appointment and off down to the vet again

Looks like he has been bitten and also got an infection, so he is on a course of anti biotics and anti inflamatories and has to go back in a weeks time, but in the meantime we can't let him out either.

So, with a bill currently running at around £500 for the 3 year old, another bill today of £100 for the 12 month old which could increase depending on how the drugs work, and the result of the biopsy on the middle one, that has been £600 we have had to fork out in a little under 4 weeks

Thank God for pet insurance!

Now we are just waiting for the oldest to become ill

Pets........ no thanks.


But, if you must, then insurance seems a necessity. Owning a dog or whatever without insurance is close to animal cruelty as surely a time will come when the owner makes a health decision based on cost rather than animal welfare.

Good to see you have it TC. Hope they get better soon.

That decision will allways be in the favour of the pet...and if you cant afford it there are charities that will assist.


Luckily for some

Back when the kids were younger, they wanted pets.
I bought them a Tamagochi.

Our cats been in some really bad fights with a monster black one, who is a lumbering bully by cat standards. he got swiped 2 weeks ago and had a 4 inch cut on a rear leg, our vet said just leave him be they hide for a week or so and then they're fine.

All this pc crap about mollycoddling pets is bloody awful.

And no its not callous

It's true, if a cut is clean and dry it's usually best left alone as long as there's no infection. The worst problem with catfight injuries is bite wounds as they are deep and don't drain well often causing bite abscesses - which I know all about as I used to have a cat that was always losing fights!

never understood people spending money on cats, when (assuming they are not pedigree cats) a replace is often f.o.c. But then I've never really been keen on them.

When I was a kid the nomal way of getting rid of unwanted kittens (lots of them since no one bothered to spend good money neutering them) was to put them in a sack and lob them into the canal. I guess you'd have to be more discrete these days, but taking one to the vet still seems to me a bit like taking a wild pigeon or an injured rabbit or a fox to the vet.

Somehow, a dog is different. Why? I cant explain.

I am allergic to dogs, if I go within 20 feet I am sneezing and scratching big time.

Our cats have always had terrific characters, been good company and being very independent don't need bathing, walking or any of the other chores that a dog needs, apart from which every time I go into a house or get into a car where a dog has been, there always seems to be a stong aroma of stale dog

So, I guess it is horses for courses, give me a cat to a dog anytime

Cats always remind me of politicians - never look you in the eye and you cant tell what they've been up to or are really thinking.

Dogs are far more reliable - they will always welcome you and give you a good old wag of the tail and licky welcome when you get home.

Dogs also do a good job of keeping an eye on yer bike.......least mine does!

We recently got a West Highland Terrier.

I cant usually stand bloody Dogs, but it does a damn fine job of getting rid of the local cats that enter our back garden

I dont have anything against Cats, mind, just cant stand 'em when they get in our back garden! Gobshitey little oiks, strolling thru the garden (and across my flowerbeds) like they own the bloody place. Not allowed to use the BB gun to scare em away, not allowed to use a paintball gun to scare em away, but the missus doesnt mind me letting loose the Dog of War on 'em.

Never had trouble keeping dogs and cats together.

The cat population in our area is declining quite quickly.

I've just got three more to go and then we should be sorted
