VAT on carriage charges

#1 Post by Fausto » Fri Jul 20, 2007 12:11 pm

Nothing pisses me off more than mail order companies totalling up the goods, adding p and p and then adding VAT so you end up paying VAT on the carriage. :smt013

OK, slight exaggeration there, lots of things piss me off even more than this BUT YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.

Is this legal?

or are they just milking it for all they can get ?

It was Yorkshire Aprilia that pushed me over the edge on this one. :smt013

I've not got a problem with them charging VAT on delivery if VAT is payable for this .....

BUT

My understanding is that all priced in UK had to be quoted inclusive of VAT - so if the VAT is added after the price has been quoted to you, I think that may contravene the regulations.

There again, I may just have 'remembered' this incorrectly .....

They have to state clearly inc Vat or Excl. Vat

All deliveries unless free incure VAT, simple.

What I object to is that companies act as unpaid tax collectors for the Treasury (if I had the money I'd challenge this on the grounds that their inspectors are paid, we should be as well).)

Thats my undrestanding too. Quoting prices ex vat to Joe Public is technically illegal but still very common.
