Try this....
Sapiens, a brief history of humankind by Yuval Noah Harari.
Utterly mind blowing, the description on the back cover reads
FIRE gave us power
FARMING made us hungry for more
MONEY gave us purpose
SCIENCE made us deadly
Astounding piece of literary work

If you source a copy and read it,I guarantee you will be hooked.
There were many times when I had to put the book down just to give myself time to mentally digest what I had read, totally blown away.
Before I was halfway through the book I ordered a copy of the following book Homo Deus, a brief history of tomorrow, which I have heard is even more intense

Ah. I've seen those in my favourite book store, even read the blurbs on the back and decided against buying them. Thanks for the recommendation.

Buy them, read them, you will never view the world in the same way again

Am up to chapter 4 of Sapiens. It's getting really depressing to read how much damage we have done to the world's ecosystems - and this is before the advent of agriculture / civilisation / technology...

Sadly the mayhem we cause is an integral part of history.
Read on, its fascinating to see how the millions of threads of our past brought us here
