They are probably desperate to replace the oil stolen from them (us) by the Russians.

Yup...
BP's Russian unit, TNK-BP, may have to halt production at a large Siberian gas field by the end of this month, Russia's environment agency has warned.
The agency told Reuters it seemed "obvious" that an inspection in the next few days would say TNK-BP was not complying with production obligations.
Both TNK-BP and UK energy giant BP have declined to comment.
Analysts say the move is just the latest attempt by the Kremlin to gain control of Russia's energy supplies.
Hardly a surprise that theyre pushing to have business ventures elsewhere. Unlike farms who switch to growing Maize mazes when times are hard, BP cant really do anything BUT go elsewhere to continue.
At least it's not Afghanistan...

As an aside, what's a ton of hydrocarbon gas look like?
Aberdeen Sheriff Court heard that more than a ton of hydrocarbon gas escaped when a corroded pipe ruptured.
BP were fined 200k for that..

Fortunately, it doesn't look like anything very much at all... unless you add a spark.

Which is paid for by the punter (they are the most expensive round here)

Yes, thats right. We pay the £200k fine. It achieves nothing at all since BP are hardly likely to casually let 1 tonne of gas go to waste and unsold. But it proves the machismo of the regulator.
Used to have problems like that when I was working . Used to bust a gut to avoid oil getting into the drains but it was absolutely impractical to avoid it altogether. So we got fined. Had to be built into the costs. The Environmant agency no doubt felt they had done a good job.

If you can tell me the secret of capturing and reselling escaped gas I think I could make us both very rich.

I haven't done the research so excuse me if I'm on the wrong track, but if BP are being fined for a gas leak by an
Aberdeen court it probably happened offshore. Leaks on oil and/or gas platforms are more of a health & safety issue than environmental... people get killed.
