Right merc a class diesel started to lose power and wifey had to abandon it. So been to check and started but left idling for 5 mins same thing so have brought battery home to fully charge and hopefully drive home tonight. Does the panel think that this is most likely the alternator ? Battery is 2 years old and appears half charged

If it's a diesel and it was running ..... how is something electrical supposed to affect its ability to run?

Power to the EFI and pump?

Yes, that would do it - pump certainly - EFI would probably just pack up.
(brain not functioning - got up too early this morning)

Could be blocked fuel filter, injectors, a knackered injector, or knackered sensor somewhere. Unfortunately the list is pretty long.
If it starts it's probably not the battery though.
My Astra diesel died last year and it was the fuel pump ECU (there are 2), but that just died completely.

Car would be 350-450 for alternator at garage plus 450 for injectors
That is a very reputable place too
Apparently as the power steering has gone lumpy then most likely alternator related. Just hope it gets home on a charged battery. The injectors have had the deals blowing for ages but they are so encased now that it has half cured the leak :)
I think that this model has a junction box under the coolant bottle that connects the power steering / alternator .... So may need a new cheap car :(

Check the auxiliary belt - has it snapped? If so, would affect alternator and probably power steering pump as well. I had one go on my old diesel Golf, water pump is on the aux circuit as well so it kept boiling

For the right fee, I could be persuaded to put a match (or burning forum moderator) into the mix...
Anyway, i don't live in Winsford any more. I don't remember the last time I saw a burnt out car, or torched mattress in the front garden!
(Just kidding. I wouldn't set fire to a car. A moderator however,

)

At this distance, I'd be suspicious of the fuel filter and EGR valve.

Hope it works out for you mate. If you do end up looking for a cheap car I've been thinking about selling my mx-5. Long mot, runs well. No leaks from the roof etc. It's a good car but I don't need 4 vehicles.
