I tried to transfer my car insurance today, I knew a premium rise was coming as Im moving from 1.3 petrol to 1.9 TDI.
Less than 6 months remaining on my policy, no changes other than vehicle.
Those thieving bastards wanted £279 PLUS admin fees which would make my policy over £800
I told em that was worse than outrageous so they looked upa new quote, all went well until they asked Do you live in a boat, motorhome,caravan or static caravan?
I asked what the relevance was and was told All the above can be moved so we cant verify where you park your vehicle.
My response was I live in a Showmans caravan,I have a postcode, Im on the electoral roll, Ive lived here for 8 years, employed full time, locally for over 6 years, you are currently insuring me at this address, I hold 2 bank accounts registered to this address. I understand if I provide false imformation I will invalidate my insurance.
Thier response That provides an additional risk so we will have to refer it to our underwriters

Dammit, I'd say time for a change of insurers except that no doubt you'd get royally screwed for that as well!

Well I got the car insured for just under £300 inc breakdown cover and paying monthly.
As for the additional risk of not knowing where my car is parked, what happens if Im visiting mates and the car is parked away from home ?

When Lancaster ring me back with a revised premium including the Pikey Premium I shall decline and speak to the insurance ombudsman

I had a "Modern Classic" car and belonged to the Owners' Club, who had an arrangement for discounted insurance with Lancaster - I checked it out and found it HUGELY more expensive than the policy I cvurrently had!

Pointless Fatboy. They are entitled to ask for whatever premium they think appropriate just as you are entitled to buy wherever you want to do so. There is no such thing as a market price for insurance since every quote is different as is every risk.

Not only that but different brokers give different "come hither" discounts. For 5 years I changed insurance broker every year to get a better price than renewal, but every policy was with Equity Red Star.

Presumably they regarded a showmans caravan as " no fixed abode" which I guess it isnt since it can be easily moved.

So dont take it personal. The premium is no more than an opinion and we all have different opinions on most things.
