Quite good to see that the disc system is on its way out. Always annoying finding a space on the bike for the ugly holders!!!!

I the wish road fund license was incorperated into fuel tax, the more you use the more the more you pay.
At least this does away with a needless tradition

Very easily manipulated system though.. And not all things that use petrol/diesel are used on the roads. :smt002

Interesting thought.... They'd probably put a stupidly high tax on it though.

The other problem with that system is that although it seems fairer because the amount of tax you pay depends on how much you use the road... there are folks in a town near us who might find it simply too expensive to go to work! There's not a lot of jobs in Swanage, and going to Poole is a 40 mile round trip. That's ok if you have a well paid job, but if you work in a shop or similar, it would be difficult to work and eat!

Which might be fair but wouldn't help the economy much!

Pain in the arse bit of information.... This will add to the pain of buying a new vehicle.. Will they give you a days grace?

On the day of purchase will I be able to actually tax the vehicle if:
  • a) The previous owner has not already cancelled their road tax ?

    b) My insurance company are a bit slow in updating the online insurance register ?

I think we can all guess the answers to these questions .......

So ..... are they expecting us to
  • 1) travel the length of the country to view/purchase the vehicle.
    2) Travel back home, wait for the insurance company to get the insurance (you already have take out) online
    3) Get the vehicle taxed
    4) Travel the length of the country yet again to collect the vehicle
all before
  • 5) you can eventually drive/ride the thing home.

I bet they are ....(that's if these bureaucrats ever go through the pain of buying second-hand vehicles)
Of course, in the meantime if the seller parks it on the road and you own it, you will still be at risk from having it untaxed.

Wonder if the motoring organisations can pick this one up for us to get some sense introduced?

It really seems like this could lead to one almighty pain when buying a used vehicle. It also adds the road tax fee to the price of any vehicle you buy and as you say, how do you process everything at once? What about the older folks who don't have smart phones or mobiles etc? Seems like a nuisance.
Hopefully there'll be a day or two grace or something. Give time to enable us to get the tax sorted...

This seems to be rather dubious, being asked to pay twice

what gets me is you still have to pay a surcharge of 5% if paying by direct debit, all my other taxes i pay by d.d council tax tv license etc do not place a surcharge for doing that , and the utilities even offer discount if you do so!
i agree it should be scrapped altogether, and it would only take 1p on a litre of fuel to make up said difference.
I pay £175 rfl for my car and do approx 12500 miles p.a cost per mile of tax 0.014p, said car does approx 50mpg so 0.014x50=0.7p per gallon extra to cover said road tax. so 1p a litre would hardly be noticed, considering fuel has gone up by over 30p a litre in 5 years.
just a thought
