When you look at the scale of need - the families that have lost everything, have no food or water .....
Millions seriously affected - and will be for a very long time.

Glad to see our government responded quickly but sending only about a quid for every person affected .... at the cost of less than 16p per person in the UK seems a wholly inadequate response from the world's 8th richest nation.

Even more need for individuals to dig deep.

The UK is staggeringly generous next to the Chinese. The most populous nation on earth have contributed a massive £100,000 to the global disaster effort. It's actually more of an insult than aid.

Good to hear the DEC appeal has raised £13m in 24 hours.
Not good to hear of the China response.

But I do have many former staff who are friends now - and I am trying to help them and their relatives

I reckon the uk response - including the government response has been spot on - it's not just the money - but our forces involvement

Yes - It seems that the biggest problem is getting the aid to the people who need it.

The scale of the disaster is almost impossible to understand even when you see the TV reports.

I have to declare an interest here - my wife is a Filipina. When we first heard about the typhoon we were pretty blase about it - yeah, typhoon - Philippines gets loads of them every year... Then when we started to see reports of winds gusting up to 235mph (way faster than a MotoGP bike!) we realised that this was a different thing altogether.

Thankfully Jackie's folks are OK, and have only suffered minor storm damage to their house. They are in Cebu island, not Leyte, Samar or Bohol, which tend to bear the brunt of these storms.

But the devastation in the worst areas bears direct comparison with those areas affected by the Boxing Day tsunami of 6 or 7 years ago; everything is lost. There are no support structures, no food, no shelter, disease is a major threat and people are totally dependent on outside aid.

Yes, I had the same ..... but I did wonder whether it's actually allowed under the terms of operation of the lottery.
The email didn't give a clue either way but I would expect it probably isn't.

What a ridiculous amount of money too - it's actually more than our government has given in aid to this cause on behalf of the whole country!
It would be far better it went to help those hit by the disaster than line the pockets of an individual.

Yes it's a bit close to home for us I'm afraid. Jules' cousin lives in Cebu and is married to a local girl, they have a 2 year old son. haven't heard from him since Tuesday, at that point he was in an evacuation centre, no power or fresh water at the time (but his iPhone worked). His wife and son were taken to another island where the rest of her family are..... except her brother who was mugged by a looting mob and murdered!

iPhone now dead so not sure when the family will here anything form him.

Everyone feels so helpless.

Yes that's right Mango.Just hoping we'll get some news this weekend as things begin to settle down and the relief effort begins to take shape.

Rachel Riddall, the instigator of this plan receved a response from Camelot saying the money was not the property of Camelot, therefore, not thiers to give away.
However,she has been re directed to the Dept. of Culture,Media and Sport, who have the ultimate say in how lottery funds are allocated...
Crosses fingers and hopes for a resonse that favours common sense....

I had that one as well - rather doubt if it will happen as legal stuff gets in the way, it's not really that simple to change it. Nice idea though.

The lottery fund bunch of gits has stated that they cannot make individual donations to disaster committees, but .....
They will make £5m availaible to UK based charities involved with the DEC Phillipines effort
