a quieter exhaust

#1 Post by lazarus » Fri Oct 25, 2013 12:11 pm

dont know why BMW have done it but the exhaust on the twin cam GS is loud. Aftermarket can loud. And a bit harsh too.

I appreciate that this is the reverse of what most people want but how can I modify the silencer to make it quieter. Incidentally, its the factory standard and done just 1400 miles so its lighly unlikely the existing packing is bu**ered.

I dont want to spend lots of money on an aftermarket can if I can make the standard one quieter.

Buy a Falco with a standard exhaust - whisper quiet and probably cheaper than a new system for a beemer.

Sorry I don't have an answer for what to do to the BM system itself

Generic DB killers are about 20 quid on fleabay if your can has an appropriate hole, I know some modern stuff is weirdly shaped.

I tried just hopefully bodging some extra packing down a can once. Went choke, cough, cough, splut, bang - and shot it all back out again.

Just a thought, has it got an exhaust valve in the can somewhere? Might be stuck or have been disabled by a previous owner. Saw one on a recent z1000. Pivotty thing on the back of the can worked by a couple of cables attached to a motorry thing on the bike.

If it isn't the pivotty thing stuck....
how about having some baffles fabricated, not that much to them, you just need the correct size

yes its got a pivoteyu thing in the pipe ahead of the silencer. but I dont thing its stuck. in any case, apparently its designed to close at the revs at which exhaust noise is measured for the eu limits. so its normally open anyway.
