I'm off on holiday to Crete in the morning, never been there before, (been to Corfu, Kefalonia and Cyprus, so won't be that unusual).
Hope to still be in touch on Wi-Fi, otherwise will catch you all when I get back.

I've been to Crete a couple of times - lovely place (as long as you stay clear of the "beach and booze" holiday areas).
Lasithi plateau is beautiful (hired a bike to ride up there)
The Gorge of Samaria is great if you like walking
Obviously the Historic sites of Knossos & Phaestos are not to be missed.
There were plenty of other places too - but I'll let you find them.
It's more than 25 years since we went though - so there will have been some changes - though the places I've mentioned are most unlikely to have changed.

Thanks Andy!
We are staying in a villa on the edge of Rethymnon, (central northern coast), which looks nice and quiet.
Will have a hire car, so will try the places you mentioned.
Cheers!

We stayed in Rethymnon for a few nights the time we went out without pre booked accommodation - turn up and see what we could find.
The night we rolled into town was the start of the Rethymnon wine festival ..... we sampled far more than our share. To this day Joy cannot remember the walk back to the place we were staying.
I think the town is probably fairly quiet the rest of the year ... at least it would have been back then.
Another good excursion was a day boat trip to Santorini (departing from Heraklion)

I was there this Summer and it is a lovely place.
Walked the Gorge which was pretty tough due to the heat and loose rocky terrain (proper walking boots are recommended.) Southern coast and ocean is spectacular.
Spent our second week off resort in Casa Leona, Channia which I can thoroughly recommend. See pic below for an idea of the view.

Went to Crete a few years ago and stayed in Elounda, a small village a few miles south of Ayios Nikolaos. It really suited us but there might not be enough there for some folks.
Ayios Nikolaos is one of the well-known aforesaid 'beach and booze' spots, but visited during the daytime it's fairly empty and rather beautiful.
