I've been doing the job on a contract basis for about 4 years (permanent before that), I set up my own company 2 years ago and have just decided that on top of the main contract I do on a daily basis that I'd start taking on some extra work too.

I figure with 3D printers becoming so popular now that more people will need someone to create 3D models of what's in their mind, people will always be looking at getting CNC parts made, which is easier if you already have a 3D model done rather than giving a company a fag packet sketch.

If you know of anyone who might be interested in my services feel free to pass my details onto them, regardless of whether they are a professional company or Dave down the road who needs a drawing doing of his broken whatyamacallit to get a new one made.

My mate took a seriously knackered flywheel from a narrowboat engine,someone failed to torque the bolts where the torque converter fitted to the flywheel, nashed threads all round.
With the aid of CAD, they re drilled and tapped 5 new mounting holes, equidistant to the originals, no compromise in strength, all done in half an hour !

Hi Wayno, this used to be my area of expertise. In the late 80's early 90s I was Chairman of the Autodesk developer's group and created parametric design and drawing management extensions to AutoCad. Before that I did a lot of 3D surface modeling and CNC machining work. Also worked for Aveva on PDMS. Anyway if you want a second opinion on a thorny application or programming problem it might be worth running it by me. Good luck with your business.

Keith. Not wanting to create tension, but why is AutoCAD so rubbish when it comes to drawing even the simplest of things? My only experience of AutoCAD has been dreadful every time.

At work we use specialist CAD/CAM systems for the waterhet (quite basic), and Solid Edge for 3D applications.

AutoCAD's strength was its customisability and programmability. I could make it do just about anything the expensive "better" systems could at a fraction of the cost and then automate it, so the work could be done in a fraction of the time.

Times have changed and there are a lot of low cost CAD options around.
