Yes, it looks like they've had all this prepared well in advance, and now we're being carpet-bombed with anything and everything about the old battleaxe.

Back in the day I swore I'd dance on her grave when she passed on, but now it's more a case of 'ok - hardly a surprise, is it?' And while I still think she did more harm than good to the UK, certain things she did were very necessary - curbing Union power being the main thing. But the destruction of the coal mining industry and the communities that depended on it are still an open wound in many parts of the country.

I've also changed my mind on the Falklands conflict, even if it was an eminently avoidable conflict. And the rise to pre-eminence of the City and the decline of manufacturing in the UK can also in large part be traced back to her policies. So - a mixed report, really.

Yes, the good-will messages from the media and politicians is really making me heave.

Whether she is alive or dead now makes no great difference - the damage she did was done decades ago and we can't change that - though we have to live in that legacy.

We know how she decimated industries and communities but probably her greater damage was done more subtly through attitude change.
The ethos of everyone for themselves, greed is good and her statement that there is no such thing as society is something that has deeply damaged the fabric of this nation.

Wish she'd decided that a career in the family grocery business was the right choice for her? ...... if only !

Even in death the old bat is managing to reek her vengeance.

They are burying her on 17th April .... the 24th and 26th birthdays of two of my sons and the actual day we lay my dad to rest.
How will I ever be able to forget her now?

Really pissed off.

I reckon the difference about Maggie is that she actually did things and we can remember them. Anybody care to mention something memorable that Wilson did, or Douglas Hume, or Macmillan, or Blair?

Personally I disagree with most of the above comments - I reckon she did a lot more good than bad. I worked in the steel industry in sheffield and I saw the huge amount of money that her government invested in modernising the industry - we went from 220k employees making 13m tonnes of steel to 45k employees making 12m tonnes. OK thats hard for the 175k employees made redundant / pensioned off though the terms were such we never had a single strike over them. but if you can make steel with 20% of the employees, how can you ever be viable doing so with 5 times as many. The mining industry was the same - very low output from tiny seams deep underground when elsewhere there were huge open cast pits digging out the same coat at a quarter of the cost. Anyway nobody who has been down a deep mine as I have would think that any British person should have to work in such appalling conditions.

Way I see it we had finished WW2 with lots of old pre war production technology and practises which survived well into the 60s because of shortages and even rationing in early years. But by the time Maggie came to power, we were well behind the game and needed sorting out. The process has continued since then with the largest reduction in manufacturing taking place under Blair of all people. Stats - manufacturing went from 23% GDP to 20% under Maggie and has fallen to 13% since then . Whats more it was falling before she came along.

Like her or hate her, personally I like her, she tried which is damn sight more than any politician this side of the 2nd WW attempted.


As for the lamentable state we are in today, its easy to blame someone who can't stand up and defend their position, yet its so easy to see where every dip in our fortunes has come from,5/7/45 to 24/10/51 in the next few weeks most things came off the ration list. 15/10/64 to 18/6/70, that stupid man Wislon signed the EU treaty. 28/2/74 to 3/5/79, Broken Britain 2 winters of discontent, 2 summers of rubbish piled up in the streets. 1/5/1997 to 6th May 2010, one of the main reasons this country is bankrupt, raids on pensions, borrow, borrow, borrow, Brown does his mates in banking a favour (deregulation) the principle reason we now prop them up. So before you all go cursing Maggie think of the fact that if you voted labour YOU are one of the principle reasons the countries in this mess. They have never done anything for anyone but themselves, like the commies in the USSR I think.

And dwell on this, if another Maggie Thatcher came along, she'd win the election again, because she would try, something this countries given up on.

I raised a glass to the old bird last night. I was a small boy when she was in power, so never really understood what was happening at the time. Reading back through the annals of history, and it becomes obviously clear.. It's been happening for decades. As has been said, until we have another Maggie in charge, we're doomed. The unions have already started to get too big for their boots as it is. Only a matter of time.

Anyway. As has also been said, this is a bike forum. Let's keep it nice. Remember her however you want. Doing around rioting and celebrating someone's death like that is shameful, and shows those people for what they really are.
