Some people obviously have more money than sense

Last night I was the guest speaker at the group meeting of the Derby Advanced Riders group.

On the way up to the meeting I stopped at Leicester Forest East services to meet a colleague who was coming with me.

I went and got a coffee and wondered back to the front door to meet my colleague and have a smoke which is by the gaming zone.

There was a chap playing the slot machines, and in the 10 minutes or so it took me to drink my coffee I watched this bloke stuff £10 notes into the machine as quick as he could. I counted at least £200 go in, and not once in the time I was watching did I see him win so much as a bean, and I guess the fact that he was sat on a stool, he had probably been there for some time before I saw him, and he was still playing when my colleague and I left 20 minutes or so later, so I hate to think how much he spent.

My initial thought was that maybe he is a gambling addict, but either way, just on the amount of cash I saw him put in, it was a good reminder as to why I have no interest in gambling as I immediately thought of a lot of things I would rather spend that amount of cash on and at least have something to show for it

The clue is on the machine - somewhere it will say what percentage it will pay out ....

Bit sad really, seeing someone banging next weeks housekeeping into a bloody slot machine.
Hope he can find the help he needs.

Each to their own I guess...
I throw money at bikes and tools, obviously not as quick as that...

Its only really a problem for him if its having a bad effect on life, he may not have a life outwith gambling...

When the children were - well, children, and we were going off on holiday in the car, Mike used to play the machines at the service area where we stopped for breakfast and invariably won enough to pay for our breakfast! Don't think they took £10 notes back then though........... and of course Mike stopped when he'd won, unlike addicts who just pump their winnings back in.

Casinos used to by my haunts, but I'd never plough tenner after tenner in to a losing machine. The old "The house always wins" is bloody true. On a couple of occasions, people had to be escorted out after turning violent from losing so much. I'll be sat at a blackjack or roulette table dabbling with £50, when sat next to me is someone with £1000 laid out. Won a few, lost a few. The late bar was the main attraction, plus the barmaid was a bit of alright. :smt005

makes me shudder. some years ago a neighbour put her bus fare to catch her train home to scotland into one of those machines and then, having lost it, set off to hitchhike :smt017

I knew a man who made a decent living in the local arcade playing the machines that others walked away from and were ready to pay out.

NOD NOD... In our youft, this technique paid for most of our drinking at the local! (and we were quite good at drinking then!)
