Pet Insurance

Our cats are not insured, had to take one of them to the vets today as she has a lump and will have to have an op. You might think that's when you wish they were insured but there was a poster on the wall that said it costs 'from' 25p a day! Well we all know what that 'from' means, and as ours are all over 7 years it would doubtless be a lot more than that. But working it out at that rate (Mike's maths not mine) that's £90 per cat per year - £270 a year.
The estimate for the op is about £450 which is less than the cost of 2 years insurance. And the last time we had a big vet bill was several years ago. So the insurance is really not worth it.

Don't ever remember such things from when I was younger.
Pet got sick, it then got better.
If it didn't get better it got put down - perhaps the vet might do something else if it didn't cost a lot.

I had the Fat Boy insured for years, finally made a claim wish was NOT honoured because I had failed to disclose imformation.....
The reason I failed to disclose the information was I didnt have the information as it was in the vets notes and never disclosed to me...
The irony is that Fatters had a major op on his ear this year paid for by the Dogs Trust, the charity supported by the insurance company

All insurance is a scam. I'm sure it started out with good intentions, but I'm not aware of any regulatory body that's been effective in keeping the system fair.
I've had a theory on motor insurance for years (slightly off-topic, sorry) about how to bring accident rates and premiums right down. Replace the air bag in the middle of the steering wheel with a bloody big spike. That will have more benefits than just getting rid of idiot drivers, as it'll take up some of the excess population that smoking used to help with.

Cheapest decent cover I could find was £110. or about the same as a medium sized bike. I've only got one so I went with it but it'll only really work in my favour if it gets something long term but not life threatening. Maybe I'm getting soft in my old age.
Hope the op on your cat goes well.

We have 3 cats, the oldest is 11, the middle one is 5 and the youngest 20 weeks old.
We pay £5 per month with Animal Friend Insurance for the oldest and about £3.60 per month for the 2 younger cats with an excess of £80 on the first part of any claim.
2 or 3 years ago middle monster had major surgery after being hit by a car twice. Total bill was about £4,000 and the insurers picked up the tab bar the first £80 and they have not loaded the premium on subsequent renewals.
But there are some pet insurers who charge the earth and cover bugger all so it pays to shop around. Certainly saved us a fortune over the years, with 4 of our previous cats having had major problems in years gone by.

But have you factored in the cost of hammer insurance?
That's unless you had a typo and were talking about trading down the hierarchy of animals ..........
