Tim, try with a touch board - ie simple pictures and alphabet
or try a large feltip and pad - may help remove some of her frustration
and take her a baseball cap or sunglassess.... (IF the unit permits them!)
no mirrors ....
IF the unit permits ipods etc, get her friends to record chats on mp3 format - brief chats about what they have been doing etc.... (If you need help doing that or setting anything drop me a text)
and the cannulas peripherally, strangely enough, is probably a pretty good sign - ie, a central line is not needed at this time
oh, and keep smiling :)

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...
Thanks all for the messages, it's appreciated.
As I said to Sheebs a bit ago,
To say she is a fighter is a bit of an understatement. She pulled the nasal tube that feeds her out, the Doc argued she wouldnt be able to eat and needs it til she has the trachy tube out, so lo n behold one silent movie argument later, she's eating... (albeit baby food)
Bless her, now she's coming round she's taking no prisoners when it comes to what she wants and when she wants it. She's being good for the nurses and doctors, just making sure she gets her own way. 'Boo Power' in full effect. I know she's been discussed at length by the Docs as she's such a slight girl, yet has managed to do things she shouldnt.. like shrug off the high dose sedatives that would knock out a large African Elephant, as well as other things. We're getting used to Doctors and Consultants saying 'I dont know how she manages to do <such n such>'
The trachy tube is due out on Thursday ( about a week early) when the Renal Docs take her for a CT scan to check her kidneys and stuff out, so hopefully she will be back to some more normality then.
Still a fair way to go, but she's progressing well. She's had a static day today, concentrating on getting rest and not trying to do too much as Thursday will be a tough day and she'll need her rest before then
To say Shaz and I are knackered is an understatement!! Juggling the hospital time, the young un and the other kids, keeping friends and family updated as well as all the travelling to and from the hossie is nails!! Luckily it's kept our minds off dwelling on things too much, which is good I guess!

That sounds like real progress, keep progressing Becky!
Also hope that things start to get better for all of you. I have been in situations like this myself a few times, and you hardly ever know what day it is, but as you say, it gives you less time to think and worry if you are constantly running around.
Trouble is that it hardly gives you any time to sleep either.
Let's hope the worst is now over.
All of us on here are thinking of you.

Last night and today have not been good.
Becky has a very real fight on her hands.
Her lungs are not a major problem now but the underlying problem has made it's presence known big style and she is now in the hands of a top neuro bod and the Big Man above.
Please spare her and her parents a thought.

In spite of the cost of living, it's still popular.
Thanks all xx from me n the missus
Yeah, kinda a bad day at the office for the last 2 days, Becky was doing well and had recovered remarkably well, to the point she was posting on FB, chatting to her mates and planning her escape from the ward. Quite a pleasant weekend of recovery and progress.
Then came the night..
Becks suffered lots of non convulsive fits thru the night then convulsive fits and seizures, with a huge one at the end, from what i can tell they didnt need the crash trolley, but it was of that kinda scale.
The doctors have drugged her beyond the eyeballs, anti fitting stuff, stuff to sedate her, stabilise her, stop her blood clotting, thicken her blood, antivirals, antiboitics, stuff to rehydrate her, paracetamol for fever, you name it she's got it going on.
The doc from Neuro has took charge of things and is heading up the (almost) hundreds of consultants, doctors, specialists, surgeons, whove been to see her. He thinks (awaiting the results of some tests) that he's got a handle on what the hell's happening inside our Boo. She's been very good at fighting stuff and equally good at baffling doctors with what the hell hit her. they cant find anything, but this Doc thinks he can piece the jigsaw together.
Becky is facing a week back in ICU in her current condition before the slow climb back up the health scale. She's back on a tube, will be on a trachy again in a week and then... who knows.
I'd rather be in a FOB in Afghanistan, really. This is savage and im well out of my comfort zone.. Blood n guts doesnt really bother me but fuck me if I see another line go into her I think i'll have to go have a proper big teary sobby cry. Bless her, she's like a pin cushion.
