Saw an orthopaedic physiotherapy specialist yesterday.

After tweaking the MRI images (sorry, pedants, if that's tautologous) it's been decided that the troublesome disc in my neck isn't touching my spinal cord after all, just the spinal canal. So, my arms and legs aren't going to fall off just yet.

However, the bony people say they're a bit bothered about the mangling in my lower back (which originated in a moment of stupidity in 1974 - an ultimately vain attempt to impress a young lady in the factory where I had a holiday job - picked up and moved a roll of asbestos cloth, weighing about 150 kilos - didn't know it was that heavy). The discs are badly damaged & worn, & there's a lot of nerve entrapment there and in the holes through which the nerves to my legs pass.

Now waiting to see a spinal surgeon.

Also on a waiting list for surgery for the carpal tunnel syndrome, & to ease the trapped nerves in my elbows.

Still looks as if I'll need to find other, less strenuous employment, though. My employers have been reasonably sympathetic so far, but I'm definitely not as capable as I was, the job's not going to get any easier, and I doubt I can hope for more than stopping my condition getting worse.

However, the nice physio lady said I needn't give up the bike - my GP was being over-cautious (understandably). Which is just as well, as I'd had enough of fretting about it, and did a couple of hundred miles over the weekend, with no more than the usual aches and twinges, and my head didn't fall off.

Probably as good as you wished for and better than you feared? Fingers crossed for the spinal surgeon's verdict.

Sort of, thanks. Not out of the woods yet - I'm not too thrilled about the prospect of surgery; I've heard a number of tales of woe from people who've had vertebrae fused, and wished they hadn't. But that's pre-judging the issue; I just hope I don't have to wait tool long to see the surgeon.

Not wishing to brush aside the worrysome bits but very glad to hear the good news and the OK to keep on riding.

Hope they can make some good progress on the things they're planning to do and the stuff they are still investigating.

.... and great news that your head didn't fall off - a number of King Henry's good ladies weren't that fortunate.

I know a man who had his done and went from being more or less unable to walk to returning to his job driving and loading/unloading a large Parcelforce wagon.

Glad you get to keep riding, and that your head didn't fall off. Mine did once and it's a bugger.

If it's any consolation mine os fused naturally and I can still do stuff hurts though but you get used to whatever cocktail works and keep going as best you can. I was even looking at whether a Falco would make a good trike or lowrider / trike tonight lol but thought bugger it get it lowered and some gel inserts and with a dose of bloody mindedness and stupidity and you should get through another year all the best :)

We usually hear a lot more about the cases that don't have a good outcome than the ones that do - people are like that, bad news spreads better than good!

Whatever the surgeon's verdict I'm sure he'll give you chapter and verse on risks v. benefits. For now, I guess some good news is better than none!

as you are being seen at oswestry, I have confidence in that lot....

the dupytrens release is likely to be worse in many ways - only do one side at a time

call me if i can help at all

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Just dropped onto this thread Mart. Sorry to hear you have been in such discomfort and I imagine it's been (and still is) a worry. Glad you've had some positive news recently. Good luck mate.
