What about writing to the prison itself? They may not be able to release the records, but they may be able to confirm (by return of letter) that he was an inmate?

What about local council records, not old enough to know ( :smt003 ), but was there something similar to council tax back then? Would they have a record of where he was, for the purpose of calculating/collecting taxes?

Maybe a longshot ....
I have some enquiries pending with the Minsistry of Justice at the moment, which hopefully will give me the informationI require.

Local records don't really help (an avenue I have already explored) for reasons I cannot disclose on a public forum, and I have already tried the borstal itself.

PNC records cannot be accessed even though we only need to prove his conviction, and he is incapable of applying under data protection as I have already explained.

You must have 'an acquaintance' in the Police? Get him arrested for something (really) minor, Lawyer type bloke on tape bring up the point he's NEVER ever been in trouble, said PC acquaintance whatever could then point out he spent time in Borstal... etc etc. if it shows on his PNC record? It would be on tape which would possibly be available thru FOI?

Doesn't cut it any more. Once upon a time I could use the old pals act, but most like me have now retired, and those now serving are total jobsworth or worried about losing their job if they disclose info off the PNC, which I can perfectly understand!

How about putting up a picture of this bloke on the web asking if anyone knows him and has any info.

I'm sure using a site like youtube would get pretty good replies.
