most of the bottled beers like spitfire are a damn sight better than the stuff served by our local pubs.

Oh dear.
The tragedy of old age is not that one is old, but that one is young.

'Go to the Pub' ?!!
Why would I want to do that?! Lager is over chilled, but they do this to the Ale as well almost everywhere now. I'd rather drink John Smiths (or my favourite tipple, Spitfire..) at the right temperature at home.

I think there are still little havens where the brewer's and landlord's art are still safe (not near here though).
When my son was at Bath uni I used to visit him there and the pubs we visited were consistently excellent in the beer they served.
I'm sure there must be bad ones there too but try randomly walking into pubs in Coventry hoping for such consistently good beer is probably a little on the wistful side of reality ....... though I might just give it another go .....

I lost interest in pubs when they did away with ashtrays.

TBH The law on smoking hasnt really had much effect on life for me. Apart from when we're driving trucks in convoy at work, poncing round the M11, M25 and M3. Cant stop past the organised stops so if tiredness does happen to kick in (well..boredom more than tiredness..more a lack of alertness.. Im sure those who've done it appreciate the situation.. ) then out pops the centre cap of the Bedford steering wheel (to use as an Small waste receptacle, hold the cigarettes and lighter..) and out comes the cigarettes. So sue me.. Pubs n the workplace, it doesnt really bother me. It's usually a good excuse to get away from boring conversations with workmates.

At a rally in France I ordered a glass of wine and got a whole bottle - and drank it!
