Why? They didn't have an election when Blair resigned, that's how we got lumbered with Gordon (who said he would have an election but got cold feet when he realised he'd probably get the whole lot of them chucked out!)Gio wrote:Well if he did resign they'd have to have an election wouldn't they

We have never elected a Prime Minister - it's not the way the system works.
Together we elect a government and they choose their leader.
In many elections we know who that leader will be but there is no commitment or requirement to keep that leader.
So no, they would just choose who they wanted to succeed him.
