I still don't get it. If the can is lined up correctly prior to the load being applied then what has your theory have to do with it pete?
And at the factory did they have a mechanical device that applied pressure to the bike whilst they fitted the exsaust... I find that highly unlikely

I think Pete's "theory" is based on how the dents are actually made. Bike falls on to RHS. Can hits ground. Impact stops can moving while mass of the bike continues down pushing the can into the swingING arm.

The theory of the graze on yours is that the previous owner mounted the can a bit close to the swingING arm and as the suspension went up and down, it wore the surface finish away.

That's how I see it.
