Westminster Speed Cameras

#1 Post by crosstowntraffic » Thu Mar 29, 2007 11:58 am

I've just seen that Westminster are now employing mobile speed cameras in the shape of black smart cars, given away by the speed camera stickers on the doors and a periscope camera sticking out of the top. Beware if commuting/riding around central London and you find yourself in a position where you can actually change out of 2nd gear.

Could they be for congestion charge? I see the vans parked up monitoring traffic so maybe they've got cars too now.

The smart cars work out of the White City storage pound and are used to detect VEL and congestion charge offenders, not speed.

Now that could be useful!

Cracking down on illegal vehicles is never a bad thing IMHO. Might even put my insurance back down one of these days..

Hi TC, what about the number of cars that are reputed to be wearing false number plates?

There are a number of ongoing operations involving TfL, NCP, Westminster Council and the Met Police to deal with false plates, but the exact specifics I cannot advise on as I no longer work for NCP :smt003

However, a little tip, if you have the old fashioned white on black plates (meant for vehicles registered prior to October 72), the congestion charge cameras (and speed cameras for that matter) can't read the plate.

But don't tell anyone I told you :smt002

I know, but can you imagine fitting a 1972 plate to a (lets say) 2002 vehicle, spesh if its a bike.
