(a+b)^2 = a^2 = b^2 + 2ac
If a and b are surds, a^2 and b^2 are rational but 2ac is irrational hence where a and b are square roots of rational numbers (a+b)^2 is not always rational (a bit like those women)
.... but then all the engineers, scientists and mathematicians already knew that.
