Have just watched the prog on telly and I reckon that the West better be looking to their laurels as having watched this prog. I think we are going to be ending up a very poor relative on the world stage. The Chinese fanaticism in all things orderly and learning is something to behold. If only our schools could install the disciplin and willingness that the Chinese children have. When I see the under 15 kids around here, that have the attitudes and foul language that they have grown up with, I shudder to think what the future holds for this country as they mature to adulthood. We seem to be sinking into a pit of which there will be no escape unless there is a radical change in the way this once proud country is being run by our so called representitives, be they Labour, Conservative or what ever. Apparently there is a saying of China "Be aware of the sleeping dragon in case it awakes" I think it has

They do what they are told because they are afraid of the consequences, their parents start that - not the schools, and the parents do what they are told by the state, they will always do what they are told while they are not given the freedom to do anything else. There more boys than girls, girls are still considered worthless, until of course the boys grow old enough to want partners, from where will they get them?

If you think about it, our days of economic success were when we had the "protestant work ethic", when thrift, frugality, self discipline were the norm. No long holidays (often no holidays) , no 37 hour week. Education was valued as indeed it still often is amongst our immigrant communities. Mind you, this discipline was most certainly not just for kids - it applied to us too.
But it seems to me that this cycle of success leading to self indulgence has happened with other civilising empires in the past, both the Greeks and the Romans, so why not us and the Americans. You certainly wont get the genie back in the bottle and suddenly have the British pop realising that they have to work harder and longer. They prefer to blame politicians for what are really their own weaknesses.
