Two traffic officers were doing a radar speed check on the A1 Great North Road near Edinburgh when their hand-held radar gun showed the speed of a vehicle approaching over the crest of a hill as being in excess of 300 mph. The radar gun malfunctioned and could not be reset... They had in fact latched on to a NATO Tornado fighter over the North Sea which was engaged in a low flying exercise. On hearing of this, their Chief Constable fired off a stiff complaint letter to the local RAF Commander
A pretty laconic reply was received which said “Thank you for your letter which allows us to close the file on this incident. The tactical computer on our aircraft had automatically “locked on” to your “hostile radar equipment” and sent a jamming signal back. The sidewinder air to ground missiles had also locked onto the target but fortunately our pilot responded intelligently and was able to over-ride the automatic system before the missiles were launched”.

They could have done with that in Leith, as well as the HoP

Except that a 'sidewinder' is an air-to-air missile, not an air-to-ground one.
It's the V-twin thing. There's just something about it that inline-4s don't have at all, and V-4s don't have enough of.

How do you know that those coppers weren't airheads?

It'll still spoil your day if it gets sent in your direction

It's a good story anyway.

The tragedy of old age is not that one is old, but that one is young.
