Protective Motorcycle Clothing - Petition to remove VAT

#1 Post by TC » Wed Aug 01, 2007 12:50 pm

I don't suppose anything will get done now that the ex Chancellor is PM, but it may be worth signing the petition asking for VAT to be removed from protective clothing, particularly leathers

I see no reason why they shouldnt! VAT free = Cheaper = Huge incentive (if any should be needed past 'the obvious' ) for people to purchase safety kit. The problem is that a lot of it is power-ranger kit, so will probably be considered as much ornamental as it is safety gear.

signed, btw

Oh and they'll make up the lost VAT money by the savings the NHS will have made!

This sounds a good thing to do .... and it may be a cost saver FOR the Government - let's face it, if this kit works, then the cost of medical care should come down.

One concern I have is that I seem to remember that motorcycle clothing manufacturers (other than helmet manufacturers) are at great pains NOT to refer to their clothing as protective - presumably so they don't get sued if you hurt yourself whilst wearing it (I guess that this is probably exacerbated as there are no defined standards for most of this kit).

If this is the case, then maybe there would be very little kit that would actually benefit from being VAT free.

I hope I'm wrong on this.

Its a badly worded petition so no chance of success.

At the end of the day motorcycling is voluntary - and why should the taxpayer subsidise it more than any other pastime / hobby such as VAT free walking boots / waterproofs , VAT free bikini's for beach volleyball players, or ill fitting jeans for skateboarders.

No support from me.

He never did anything for anyone, unless you consider making people being made poorer a bonus.

I'll support anything that annoys the present incumbents, they are all daft as a toilet brush
