TBH I just don't understand why anyone would want to refuse any part of their body if it's useful to someone else, after all, it's no good to you when you're dead, is it?

I'd like to donate the whole of my body to medical research and instruct my family to spend what the funeral would have cost on a damn good party!

my sentiments exactly

but - and here is the rub, go read the accounts of Christian Barnard, who did the first heart transplant

in south africa

in the late sixties

and read about the whole colour thing
(The fact that you would be unlikely to get a 1-1-1 match cross colours means nothing of course but....)

Also, our laws are different from other countries - he we can not sell our organs - but it is common elsewhere.... he we transplant by match, not by need or wallet size - vastly different to elsewhere.

I guess what I am saying is that that law would work for us, but would possibly fail in the wider context of europe....

and finally relax goldie - we are still experimenting with Pig's organs, so will be a while before we try the Frog stuff.....

My wife needs a kidney transplant and she has got a 1.1.1 match from a relative. It will happen as soon as the red tape brigade get their finger out of their arse and start putting pen to paper.

Before I met her I was dubious about the whole organ donation thing but now I will happily give most of my organs to someone else when I bite the bullet, all except my eyesII have issues with this)

If any one does not want to give their organs then it is their choice but their views will change should they have a relative or friend that is in need. In the last three months, two people have died in the ward that Davina is on, waiting for a kidney to come available. They were somebodys relative. For a family member to donate something that will save a life and give them a much better quality of life is just totally and utterly SELFLESS and AMAZING. Same goes for someone who donates organs on their death.

I take my hat off to anyone who has done this. You are the true heros in life. Have an expensive drink on me

is a way of grading tissue for compatibility - 1-1-1 is a very good/perfect match, and is what is aimed for in the UK - other countries will go for 1-2-2 etc and accept it and use high doses of immuno-suppressants - that can cause cancer and secondary infections.....

yep, in the recipient

living donations, in this country, are subject to the same high match requirements, and are normally blood family members (Not always though - husbands and wives seem to get closer to each other over time!). Overseas, particuarly India etc, selling an organ is quite commonplace - the surgery is often shoddy on the donor, and they often get very little cash - the recipient can do very well with a non matched organ, but due to high amount of drugs they need to take the likelihood is that they will develop a tumour or other neoplasm

And cheers Paddy - I was aware, but did not want to speak out for you, as that is for you to decide to do
