Motorcycle racing will be added to the schedule at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2008, track president Joie Chitwood has confirmed.

MotoGP will compete on the IMS road course in 2008, Chitwood told the Indianapolis Star. MotoGP has an 18-race schedule with its US Grand Prix held annually at Laguna Seca, California.

Indy's date is expected to be September 14. Chitwood said details will be confirmed at a news conference at the Speedway on July 16.

An adjustment to the Speedway's 2.66-mile road circuit is also expected to be detailed at that time. It is thought that the motorcycles could run counterclockwise on the Speedway, in the opposite direction now used by F1.

The race will commemorate the Speedway's first motorized event, a motorcycle race in August 1909. MotoGP could be part of a four-event Speedway calendar for next season.

The track's chief executive officer, Tony George, spoke with F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone by telephone earlier this week about bringing the US Grand Prix back for a ninth year. They have plans to talk again next week, Chitwood said.

"I'm encouraged by that," Chitwood told the Star.

That race's contract expired after last month's race.
