Dual Compound / Triple Compound - what's it all about?

I have been under the impression that dual compound tyres were constructed with a hard wearing central section and stickier edges for cornering grip. Such as Pirelli Diablo Strada.
Now we have triple compound..... what they then?

Dunno! Yeah, I have duallies on mine and understand the concept, I can only assume that triple means the mid section is a medium compound, rather than the edges being soft and the centre hard.

I did have a scan of that but it left me none the wiser really.
Do we really need 'triple compounds' for road riding? Im sure it's just a carry over from WSB, a money spinner rather than a need.

Yes it was Nooj's comment that got me thinking. (slowly)
I don't know much about race tyres but they seem to be able to have whatever combination of compounds suits them for a particular track. Road tyres are more straightforward thankfully.
Yes Kwackerz I tend to agree with you - it's all marketing doublespeak ( or triplespeak ?)
