It wasn't them that were so bad, it was the stuff that came out of Japan in the early 70s that traumatised me .... Yokahamas and Bridgestones (yep Bridgestones have not always been what they are today!)

Seem to remember I used to wear the footpeg rubbers out pretty well on my old Matchless 650 CSR and Triumph Tiger 110. (OK I know they were low in those days). The only one I couldn't ground was the Paul Dunstall Norton 650 SS, but that had much higher rearsets. Then again my balls were much bigger in those days, more worried about loosing them these days.
I had some form of Dunlop on the BSA 250 I rode in the early 70's, they weren't bad in the dry, but very interesting in the wet/snow/sleet. They felt as if they were made of solid rubber and they barely got warm on a dry day in the summer. Plus of course with drum brakes front and rear you wondered if you'd ever stop

That was when people first started mixing tyres, Avon Speedmaster (MkII) on front, Dunlop K70 rear and seemed to work really well, everybody I knew then did it!

Talking of Diablo I had a frightening slide on my well worn but legal Diablo lat week and it had nothing to do with diesel, I checked the pressure but nothing wrong so after a gentle ride home with a couple more slides thrown in on the way home I subsequently fitted my new Michelin Sports I had bought earlier this year for a budget price and they feel just great.
The Diablo are a good tyre and I have had a few sets on the falco but the one that came of the rear this time was braking up inside, it almost looked as If it had been run flat, very strange

Weird stuff. Got Diablos on one and Pilot Powers on the other and far prefer the Diablos. The Michelins grip brilliantly (only when warm!) but when they let go they do it big time

.
Mind you, remembering to run the right air pressure helped a wee bit
Maybe that was the problem for you GM? (34/36 on the PPs and 36/40 on the Diablos seems to work for me)

I run 2.8 bar rear and 2.5 bar front on the Michelin sports Kenif as I am about 16 stones, I ran about the same on the Diablo. This was my 2nd set of Diablo's and I liked the feel wet or dry. Most likely my last Diablo rear got damaged some how but I can't think how.
The Michelin's are a little slow to warm as you say but once up to temperature they are very good road tyres with about the right balance between grip and ware. The new Michelin's road 2 are supposed to be a great improvement so maybe next time I will give them a go when the prices come down a bit

I'll have the rear removed and checked then and if its breaking up I'll consider a claim for damage against Pirelli.

It crossed my mind Gio but at the end of the day they had reached about the end of their natural life and I could not be arsed, imagine the response I would get from a large company like Pirelli, chow
