The damn thing has to fit properly in the 1st place.

No, what's daft is people that go out and buy a new helmet simply because they like the race replica paint scheme and you are never going to be able to help such buyers.

Something else that's daft is people that are convinced that the most expensive and most widely regarded helmet is going to give them better protection than another one made by a different company at a lower price, these tests have just proved that to be wrong, disturbingly so.

However having a fully independant test carried out of a selection of lids that you are looking at is a perfectly sensible idea, it is then down to then down to the buyer to go out and try a few lids on and find the right one for them. Under the old system any old shit could pass the basic standard and you didn't know what you were putting on your head, for most it came down to first hand experience or paying more for a name for peace of mind.

I still can't get over the fact that supposedly the best lid on the market scored so badly. If nothing else these new ratings should give some of the big names that have been charging inflated prices on the grounds of their name being on them a large kick up the backside.
