It was a sleeve that's part of the shaft drive - it should have had splines in it! New one fitted, all systems go! Not cheap but not as expensive as the gearchange problem that was suspected.

Mostly good so far, currently staying with my daughter and her partner in Southport before setting off further north on Tuesday!
